BLR EARNS ADDITIONAL FAA APPROVALS
Everett, WA March 26, 2001: The FAA has approved
the BLR Strake Kit developed by Boundary layer Research, Inc.
(BLR) for use by private and commercial operators of Bell
205, 205A-1, 205B and 212 helicopters. The approval was issued
as a Supplemental Type Certificate (STC) for the modification
and is based on technology patented by NASA Langley Research
and licensed to Boundary Layer Research, Inc. exclusively
for commercial development. Under the licensing agreement
NASA receives royalties on kit sales. The BLR Strake modification
is sold in kit form and can be installed in the field environment
within a day using two technicians. Installed weight of the
kit is 5.5 lbs. The BLR strake device works by manipulating
boundary layer airflow produced by the helicopters main rotor
to improve aircraft hover stability, climb and cruise characteristics.
The technology is the result of more that eight years of wind
tunnel and flight-testing completed by a team of NASA and
U.S. Army researchers. BLR has plans to adapt the device to
fifteen different models of helicopters over the next few
years. Last May the Company received its first FAA STC approval
for use of the strake kit on civil versions of the UH-1H "Huey"
helicopter.
Boundary Layer Research, Inc. is a Washington State based
company that designs and develops products based on boundary
layer airflow. Mr. Robert Desroche founded the company in
1992. BLR products have already brought performance enhancements
to more than sixty models of aircraft in over ninety-six countries.
Modifications include vortex generators, winglets, wing-tip
tanks, airframe strakes, flow modifier, landing gear upgrades
and the NASA patented Tailboom Strakes.
